After two successful MUZEUM@DIGIT Conferences on Digital Cultural Heritage in 2013 and 2014, the Hungarian National Museum National Centre of Museological Methodology and Information organised the conference for the third time on 3-4th November 2015 in Budapest.

The conference aimed to share and discuss the perspectives and trends of modern digital museums and museum, library and archives digitization regarding the future plans of this field. Some of the topics we covered: digital best practices, digital museum, data visualization, mobile technologies in museums, storytelling, aggregation, international projects, digitizing, gamification, cloud services and many more topics.

In 2015 the conference had the pleasure to host the AVICOM event, the International Audiovisual Festival on Museums and Heritage (FIAMP). FIAMP highlights the best achievements in the world of museology, the awards ceremony will be held in the Hungarian National Museum. Related to the festival, we invited some of the best productions to hold a lecture about their work.

Beside the presentations, we also provided an unique opportunity to the companies operating in this area to demonstrate their profiles. Attending our conference presented a great value and an excellent opportunity to meet industry experts and professional lecturers from Hungary and other European countries as well.

This paper explores the potential of digital and immersive technology as a means of creating more meaningful shared experiences in the museum. It presents the travelling exhibition Rebel Bodies which was inaugurated in March 2015 at the Musée de la civilisation in Quebec City, Canada, and created in partnership with members of the national and international communities of artists. A project exclusively dedicated to contemporary dance, the exhibition transcends the conventional museum-going experience, becoming a participatory onsite work-in-progress and a catalyst for inquiry on matters of performance and intangible cultural heritage. The exhibition includes a full scale dancer’s studio (Danser Joe) progressively transforming the museum experience from that of a passive information-gathering event into a more interactive, empowering and inspiring opportunity for artists and visitors alike. Through the use of digital media and immersive technology, the museum-goer learns to become part of Joe, a group piece created in 1983 by Quebec dancer and choreographer Jean-Pierre Perreault. In the Studio, both contributing artists and visitors become active participants who contribute in a collective effort to reinterpret and, by extension, help preserve the memory of the play through re-enactment.

    Stéphane Bezombes:
Digital design and audience engagement strategy
The digital enhancement of cultural heritage is the result of a history that began in the mid 1970s and continue to accelerate during the last 10 years. Nowadays, the stakeholders of digital transformation in museums have acknowledged more or less difficulties to keep pace with the digital skills and mobile practices of visitors. But museums needs long term vision, not only just-in-time projects. Organizations need to establish new strategy to emerge, develop, capture and disseminate best digital interpretation project, and arouse sustainable cultural interpretation. With some examples, we will try to illustrate the digital transformation of cultural interpretation factories and the visitors behaviors in new tracks.

Fejes Ildikó: MuzeumStat. Museums in numbers
The National Centre for Museological Methodology and Information was founded in 2011 by the decision of the Ministry of Human Capacities. One of the first tasks of the Centre was to create and launch an integrated professional database for the Hungarian museum institutions. The constantly developing system contains statistical data of the museums and the municipalities, EU co-funded museum projects, contact information of the Hungarian museums, basic documents (operating licenses, deeds of foundation), as well as specialized surveillance reports, an management modules and an inventory module that supports the surveillance. New problems arisen from the reporting practices made automated solutions possible only in few cases. During the ongoing development, the coherence within each data group (annual statistical reports), then among the data groups had to be created in order to launch the online service. Our goal was to create a niche, user-friendly and informative service using data visualization techniques that display the results in a spectacular way. The online service enables the users to access to nearly 10-year of most the important figures of the museum institutions and their operating environment. The Hungarian and English versions of the database can be found at: ommik.hu

    Samuel Franco Arce:
    Treasures of Nepal
Nepal is a versatile mosaic of different ethnic groups whose languages, cultures and religions have over the centuries penetrated and settled the hills and valleys. Perhaps nowhere else on earth is there such a concentration of important monuments which are still active and part of everyday life. There are a total of ten World Heritage Sites in Nepal nominated by UNESCO, eight of which are outstanding cultural sites and two natural treasures. This presentation is about an effort to document and disseminate the impact of the April 25th, 2015 earthquake on Nepal’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including a talk and a 15 minutes video of a pre-earthquake sequence documented in 2008 during the “Dasahin” festival (one of the most important annual Festivals of Nepal) celebrated at the World Heritage sites of the Kathmandu’s valley, Durbar Square and Patan.

    Richárd Fromann:
Gamification motivation tools for museum renewal
Nowadays every institution has to face the fact that new (net)generations that have a much more different point of view than earlier generations, grow up. The most dominant branch of netgeneration socialized on digital assets seems to stand out, their life is full of online games, so we can communicate with them only with gamification and game mechanisms. With regard to the fact that generations growing up at the moment own the future, we have to examine the work mechanisms of gamification and in line with that we have to consider and rewrite the world of museums and exhibitions. In the future it will be prominently important not just to show things but to involve and engage people with the help of gamification based on web 2.0. Nowadays involvement has become very important, besides the presentation of piece of art it is substantial to involve people in the experiences of art and make them react.

    Bob Haroutunian:
National September 11th Memorial Museum Technical Design
The design of the media presentation and delivery systems for the National September 11th Memorial and Museum on the World Trade Center site in New York represented an extraordinary challenge requiring the content management and delivery of over 140 simultaneous programs occupying 10,000 square meters of exhibition space. Mr. Haroutunian will discuss the programmatic requirements, planning, design and implementation of the underlying technology and systems that were incorporated in this project.

Ádám Horváth: The reference model of aggregation: Synergy
The aim of the presentation is to explain the Synergy Model created by the Foundation for Research and Technology and the Institute of Computer Science. The goal of the model is to describe the provision of data between providers and aggregators, to address the lack of functionality in current models (OAIS) and practice. The model would like to support the continuous and sustainable data provision by the providers and ingestion by the aggregators.

Hu Jiang: The Core Values of Shanghai Museum’s Digitalization Construction
From Shanghai Museum’s establishment of the first Information and Data Center in China to the successful hosting of the Expo 2010 as well as the 22nd ICOM General Conference and 25th General Assembly of ICOM 2010 in Shanghai, especially the successful hosting of AVICOM General Assembly, all of these symbolize the information construction and museum exhibitions’ digitalization process of the Shanghai Museum has gone through the Age of Touch Screen as Supplementary Presentation Mode as well as the Age of Database, Network, Website and Interactive Display, and then entered the Age of Scene-mode, Multi-perspective Demonstration and International Creative Cooperation. Each of these three milestone-style stages of development has its own core values and produces an effect on the development process of the digitalization display of Chinese museums. Now, the digitalization display of the Shanghai Museum moves further towards resource sharing and standardization, the digitalization of exhibitions and scenes, and multi-perspective demonstration and Internalization.
    • Age of Touch Screen as Supplementary Presentation Mode: Shanghai Museum’s Enlightenment Period of Digitalization Display (1984-1998)

    Olga Kissel:
Internet Festival of Museum Multimedia “Museum Geek”
The State Museum of the History of Religion is a Russian-wide research and methodology centre within the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation working on the problems of museum religion studies. Each year the museum holds regular seminars, internships and conferences on various problems of religion and museum studies, including questions about implementing and using digital technologies in museums. To organise this research and methodology work in the field of digital technologies, the museum chose the format of an internet festival. This format allows remote study of the practices of Russian museums in the field of museums' digital programs and allows participants to make some general conclusions based not only on their own experiences.
In 2014, the State Museum of the History of Religion organised the first Internet Festival of Museum Multimedia - “Museum Geek”.  44 museums from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus participated in the competition. Joint projects with Finnish museums were also submitted. 71 applications were submitted for 5 categories of the competition (‘digital collections’, ‘multimedia for exhibitions and collections’, ‘educational programs’, ‘programs for people with special needs’ and ‘museum advertising and PR’).

Tímea Kókai Nagy: New generations in museums
The next big challenge of the cultural sector and museums is to conquer the digitally native young, Generation Z: those who prefer to be entertained by free and easy programmes instead of getting deeper into „boring” art events. The moment has come to create cultural programmes and their communication tailored for Generation Z’s needs, but that requires our thinking to be reshaped. But how?

    Béla Tamás Kónya:
    Save as
From the second part of the 20th century artists have been using new technologies that present a big challenge for museums when it comes to collecting them. Media art based on technology – videos, film, digital art, art based on the internet – is shifting and because of that we need to approach conservation from new aspects and perspectives. The international discussion about preserving media art started in the middle of 1990’s. This process has not appeared in Hungarian conservation education, the catch up is still yet to come.

The tools of modern network technology and Web 2.0 have made it possible for big masses to not just consume and access information but to take part in creating, innovate and provide information actively. Scientific research is trying to involve active masses into researches supporting “civic science” with network tools. Many international projects are on the way from the topic of astronomy through ornithology to weather observation that are in line with “civic sciences” and “crowdsourcing”. OSZK joined the project Civic Epistemologies in 2014 aiming to make this methodology more current in the field of human studies and public collections.

    Various perspectives in museum digitisation
On behalf of Monguz Ltd we would like to present an overview on challenges in digitisation field related to the museum sector. Our achievements in this field will be summarized (highlighting the Museumap portal- a joint portal of the Hungarian museum sector). We would like to focus on the good practices from the library sector in  metadata quality assurance field and present the collaboration model of the national joint library catalogue system. In our opinion the museum sector can successfully use the library know-how  in this context. The next  major development step in digital museum field can be the appearance on the semantic web. We would like to introduce practical examples about benefits for museums in order to put themselves on the semantic cloud. We will present our service portfolio that can help museums in order to build up their semantic web solutions.

Dóra Péter: Challenges for the ICOM membership management

It will be continuously enhanced with other tools to better fit ICOM’s needs.

In her presentation Zsófia Ruttkay talks about the ways how museums can think about strategy that looks behind exhibition experience when they aim to use digital technologies. The aim is to form a strategy based on complex, new museum tasks and a mission which does not only think about QR/app/kinect solutions. Zsófia will show examples and new interesting applications, but the presentation rather aims to provide a general idea about the topic.

András Smohay: Indoor localization based on iBeacon and EddyStone in the Diocesan Museum of Székesfehérvár
The Diocesan Museum of Székesfehérvár has been looking for the technology that can help visitors learn the exhibitions using their own smart tools. In 2015 with the help of EnitLab Ltd. the museum developed an indoor localization test system based on iBeacon technology. The next step will be the development of an application that can be downloaded by anyone. The presentation examines the demands that have occured so far from a museological point of view, furthermore it discusses the experiences gained in the last months and the future plans.

Gábor Tatai: Content, Visitor Management and Technology – Determining the Level of Harmony. Case study on the opening of the Parliament Museum
It is a rare occasion if one can participate in the creation of an entirely new museum from planning to opening. The Parliament Museum was opened in 2015 after more than two years of planning, development and preparation. The exhibition includes several state-of-the-art audiovisual components in order to make the difficult subject of the museum - The 1000 Years of Hungarian Legislation - digestible and even enjoyable for the visitors. The project inherently contained several challenges that had to be dealt with by the developers and the museum staff. A framework helping the analysis and optimization of the level of harmony of the content, the visitors logistics and the technology will be demonstrated. The Parliament Museum will be used as a demonstration and case study.

    Natalia Tolstaya: ADIT
In June 1996, the Presidium of ICOM Russia gave ADIT the status of the commission on problems of museum informatics. The annual conference in a nomadic format (every year in a new region of Russia) became the main event of ADIT since then. Gradually the circle of the problems considered at the ADIT conferences extended: electronic catalogs and databases, a hardware of the museums, multimedia production, the sites of the museums and their page on social networks, the general principles of information policy and openness of the museums. ADIT realizes also long-term projects, works with youth and carries out information support of museum research projects. Members of ADIT became recognized experts in the field of development of IT in the museums.
